Largest repository of Nepal bhasa vocabulary goes online
The largest dictionary of Nepalbhasa so far, Nepalbhasa.org was made public during a virtual event on January 2. The online dictionary contains 30,000 Nepal Bhasa words and their meanings.
In the event, Gyan Maharjan from the dictionary committee introduced the dictionary. Similarly, another member of the committee Rajesh Tandukar elaborated on the group effort and how the project was carried out. Asmeet Mall highlighted the features available on the website.
Software developers Chetana Shakya and Sujan Joshi shed light on the technical aspects of Nepalbhasa.org, including the search features, index, proverbs, and other language resources.
In the program, famous writer and researcher Kashinath Tamot analyzed the history of Nepal bhasa language dictionary as well as the new online dictionary. The director of the project Dr. Subhash Ram Prajapati informed about the future plans for digitization of Nepalbhasa and other Himalayan languages along with the dictionary. He mentioned that the dictionary is the first milestone of digitization of Nepalbhasa with similar programs in the pipeline. In the second phase, a dictionary of Dolakha dialect, Nepal bhasa English dictionary and tools related to Nepal Lipi (Nepaal scripts) will be available.
Santosh Prajapati, President of Dabuli Nepal, renowned researcher Dr. Bal Gopal Shrestha, Sri Laxmi Shrestha, Vice-Chancellor of Nepalbhasa Academy Yagya Ratna Dhakhwa, Dr. Pushpa Raj Rajkarnikar of Nepalbhasa Academy and Secretary of Lok Sahitya Parishad Rajit Bahadur Shrestha, Editor of Nepalbhasa Times Suresh Manandhar were present at the virtual launch ceremony.
The program was broadcasted live on half a dozen of Facebook pages including Dabuli, Dabuli Nepal, Newah Pride. This dictionary has been compiled by collecting various dictionaries published in Nepalbhasa. So far, 10 books have been digitized and the website has Newari probers, Newari Names, informative games among others.
The dictionary was created by an organization called Dabuli.
